'The first time Doris M. Scarborough, 74, sat in front of a computer, she didn’t know where to put her hands.

“I didn’t know how to turn it on,” she said. “I used to squeeze the mouse so much it was sweating in my hand. I didn’t know I could just hold it gently.”

That was four years ago. Now Ms. Scarborough, a resident at the Bet Shalom Apartments retirement community on Chandler Street in Worcester, reads the news on the Web and e-mails family members several times a week. She says she can’t imagine her life without a computer.
