The Music Downloading Deluge: 37 million American adults and youths have retrieved music files on the Internet

4/24/2001 | MemoReport  | Mike Graziano Lee Rainie

As of February 2001, 29% of American Internet users say they have downloaded music while online. That is a notable increase from the 22% of Internet users who said in July-August 2000 they had ever downloaded music. Moreover, the probability of finding an Internet user downloading music on any given day increased nearly 100% in the six months between August 2000 and February 2001. Downloading of music increased in virtually every demographic category. And in another recent survey of children, 53% of online youth 12-17 reported downloading music. This survey also shows a marked increase in the percentage of Internet users who have ever listened to music online, up to 40% of all Internet users by February 2001. Both downloading and listening showed significant increases in the percentage of Internet users doing those activities on a daily basis.
