One-fifth of nation does without Net

'"About one-fifth of Americans don't have home Internet access and have never been online, potentially leaving them without access to crucial information, according to a study released Wednesday.

The population of Internet users continues to grow, and about one-third of Americans are "elite," savvy users with broadband connections, said the study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

But older Americans lag far behind in Internet adoption. Only 26 percent of people 65 and older go online, compared with 67 percent of those age 50 to 64.

People with lower incomes and less education also had lower percentages of Internet adoption.

Businesses and governments should remember this population of Internet have-nots, many of whom have no intention of learning how to get online, said Pew Project researcher Susannah Fox."

Many news sites move articles into data bases after a period of time and then offer them for sale, in the process changing the URLs that link to them. Or they require registration. Thus, we provide a link to the front page of the news website and the information necessary to find the story on that site, rather than a direct link to the article.
