'Matt Smith is 17, articulate and adept at using the Internet. He says he has used the Web since he was in the third grade. Teachers twice his age and older may or may not have his comfort level with technology, he has found. "Some of the teachers I've had don't know how to use e-mail, much less the Internet," he said. In a few weeks, Matt starts his senior year at San Diego High School. He was one of 136 middle- and high-school students from San Diego, Detroit and Washington, D.C., who participated in focus groups for a national study about Internet usage in the classroom. The study was done for the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
