This should come as no surprise at a time when a phrase like “binders full of women” can instantly become an Internet meme, but a new study shows that about 66 percent of social media users have used those platforms to comment about political candidates and issues.

The Pew Research Center study says younger social media users, and those who are either liberal Democrats or conservative Republicans, are more likely to post their thoughts, links to political material and to urge others to take political action.

“At the height of the campaign season, it is clear that most social media users, especially those who care about politics, are using the tools to debate others, stay in touch with candidates, flag political news stories and analysis that are important to them, and press their friends into action,” said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet Project. “We’ll see the fruits of this neo-activism on Election Day.”
