The Pew Internet and American Life Project today released a new report on the growing popularity of Twitter and other services used by people to post status updates to the Internet. According to the report, 19% of Internet users in September 2009 said they used Twitter or another service to share updates about themselves or see updates about others. The last time Pew asked this question back in April of this year, just 11% of those surveyed said they used Twitter or a similar service. In contrast, the percentage of Internet users who also used social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace climbed only one percentage point, from 46% in April to 47% in September.

Despite the enormous growth experienced this year by Twitter, the median age of Twitter users remains 31 years old. According to Pew, this is five years older than the median age for MySpace users (26) and eight years younger than LinkedIn users (39). Facebook users, meanwhile, have started to get older; their median age jumped to 33, up from 26 in May 2008.
